Baliz woof woof: Not So ‘Ruff’ Being a Dog

We know the benefits of organic produce for human health, but what about the health of our four-legged friends? Soul Economy gets the low-down on organic whole-food for pets from Baliz Woof Woof small-business owner, Annette.

How and why did the business start?

I have always had concerns feeding my own pets anything called ‘pet food’ – ‘not fit for human consumption’ or ‘by-products’. For almost two decades I have fed my dogs Blacky and Lizzy mostly organic and always human-grade quality food based on natural feeding principles.

Having eaten this quality food for most of his life, Blacky was an active and brilliant example of a healthy and mature dog, until he passed away at the age of 17. Lizzy is now 14  years of age and her recent check-up results are all perfect, even our vet complimented on her health and excellent nutrition. Lizzy is vibrant and energetic and has no signs of arthritis. Through BALIZ Woof Woof organic pet food, I hope that other dogs and cats will be able to enjoy the benefits of a long and healthy life.

Exactly what does the business involve? What are the products you offer?

BALIZ Woof Woof retails/wholesales organic meats (i.e. organic lamb, chicken mince, lamb hearts, liver, kidney, chicken wings, chicken necks), organic veggie packs (veggie power pack, pumpkin power pack, purple power pack, green power pack) and organic liver treats.

Those foods are of human-grade quality, have no flavours and fillers or preservatives added. The food is frozen and is currently sold Sydney-wide at pet shops, health food shops, a vet clinic and at some organic markets. Through the website (http://www.balizwoofwoof.com.au/) and at the organic markets BALIZ Woof Woof also retails other ethically and nutritionally sound pet products (i.e. supplements, treats, dry food, organic canned foods, skin care products, etc. which are of a quality and standard our customers can trust).

What are the benefits of your product over conventional pet foods?

Conventional pet food is mostly made up from by-products (a food product which for several reasons is no longer safe to consume for humans). Pet food companies are permitted to utilize these ingredients in food for pets. Pet food not only includes meat (by-products) but also large amounts of wheat by-products. Those foods are highly processed, i.e. cooked at very high temperatures, have synthetic vitamins and minerals and preservatives added.

In almost all animals, the switch to a fresh/natural diet improves health and can prolong their life and vitality. Studies show people and laboratory animals that eat a fresh diet are healthier and have a lower incidence of cancer, stroke and heart disease compared to those who eat processed foods. New research has confirmed organic food contains superior nutrient content compared to conventional foods. In particular the organic veggie packs are a key ingredient to any diet. They contain much needed vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants to counteract some of the deficits of processed foods. The carottenoids in vegetables are especially important nutrients, preventing disease and slowing down the ageing process.

Aside from health benefits, many customers are also conscious of the ethical benefits of buying organic food such as low food miles, the absence of synthetic chemicals and fertilizers, the positive effects on the environment and the humane treatment of live stock.

What have been the successes of the business?

It has been extremely satisfying to see how customers and their pets have embraced our food. From humble beginnings to this day, it seems there are many pet owners (similar to myself) wanting to get food they feel comfortable to feed to their four-legged family member. Through our market experience and from customer emails/phone calls we get to hear good news all the time. Customers are recommending us to their friends, relatives, and work colleagues. I even hear from owners of dogs and cats receiving cancer treatment, who besides their ailments are looking healthier than ever after changing to our diet. A pet shop in Bondi has re-named their store as ‘the shop of the farting dog’ after discovering the anti-flatulence benefits of our Purple Power Pack. They reckon their dog Phoenix is now producing far less gases and as a result there has been a slight shrinking of the hole in the ozone layer!

When we are at the markets some dogs pull their owners to our stall before they go anywhere else (we obviously reward our loyal furry customers with ample supplies of organic liver treats). On our off-weeks the dogs still look for us.

For anyone interested in cat poetry – please read Kitty’s story on our woof-back page! There are so many talented and gifted pets out there we can hardly keep count!

What have been the challenges you have dealt with in the business?

Obviously it is challenging to start any new business. The early starts, late finishes, weekend work and enormous workload require much energy and commitment. Securing high quality supplies for an ever growing dog and cat patronage and expanding the business beyond its current geographical boundaries are some of the challenges of being part of a growing biz in the organic food industry.

What have you learnt from your involvement in the business?

Having a strong passion for sustainable food production/living, animal-friendly ethics and a genuine love for pets, it is a rewarding and satisfying experience combining those areas in one business. But passion alone is not enough to make a business successful. Quality advice and input from experts is much needed.

There are many positives in meeting and networking with like- minded people and it has been very beneficial to network with other businesses.

I have met inspiring individuals who dedicate their time and energy in worthwhile areas ranging from development of safe and sustainable products, to volunteering in animal shelters and working in environmental sustainable businesses/organic farming.

Customers also seem to value the interaction and a genuine personal connection which is an important part of our work and one of the reasons why we attend organic markets.

What is some advice you would give to others keen on starting their own responsible businesses?

Make sure you have sound business advice and you are prepared to work much harder than you have ever worked before. It can be a rewarding but also a challenging experience. Only get involved in a business if you are a 150% ready for it. There will be moments when you don’t remember why on earth you have chosen this path! Financial resources are paramount and there is not always a quick return. Don’t plan a holiday during the first 3 years!
